(Destination Queenstown) |
9ha | NZ Winegrowers 2026 Vineyard Report |

Central Otago Pinot Noir Trip: Queenstown-Area Wineries and Cellar Door Bookings
If you are staying in Queenstown, Cromwell or Wanaka, the Central Otago wine region is well worth a day of your trip. This guide covers why Pinot Noir does so well here, how the sub-regions (Gibbston, Bannockburn, Cromwell, Wanaka and others) differ, five cellar doors whose opening hours, booking policies and tasting fees we checked on official pages, and how to visit without driving — tours or the Gibbston bike trail. Opening hours and prices change often, so everything here is marked with the date we checked it (30 September 2026). Please confirm on the official websites just before you go.

What kind of wine region is Central Otago?
New Zealand Winegrowers (nzwine.com) describes Central Otago as New Zealand's southernmost wine region, with Pinot Noir as its signature grape. Chardonnay, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer and Sauvignon Blanc are grown too, but Pinot Noir is what you will see most at cellar doors.
Size figures vary a little by source.
| Item | Figure | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Vineyard area (2026 forecast) | 2,116 ha, about 5% of NZ | NZ Winegrowers 2026 Vineyard Register snapshot |
| Vineyard area (tourism description) | About 2,000 ha, just over 3% of NZ | Destination Queenstown |
| Pinot Noir share | Roughly 75–81% | "Over 75%" per Destination Queenstown; about 81% calculated from NZ Winegrowers 2026 report (Pinot Noir c. 1,709 ha) |
| Number of vineyards (2025) | 233, averaging about 9 ha | NZ Winegrowers 2026 Vineyard Report |
| Wineries and tasting rooms | About 135 wineries, 40+ open for tastings | Destination Queenstown |
In short, it is a small share of national production, but most of the land is planted in Pinot Noir — a Pinot specialist region. Vineyards are also smaller than the national average (about 22 ha), so there are many small producers.
Why Pinot Noir thrives: climate and landscape

In its regional overview, NZ Winegrowers writes that "the extreme climate rewards careful site selection with wines of great intensity and finesse, and encourages an increased focus on subregional expression." Describing the Bendigo sub-region, it says wide plantings on stony soils capture the extreme climate's hot summer sun and cold clear nights.
As general background, Central Otago lies far inland, so the gap between day and night temperatures tends to be large. Pinot Noir is thin-skinned and sensitive to both heat and cold, so it tends to do well where days are warm enough to ripen the grapes and nights are cool enough to keep acidity. The region is a landscape of basins and valleys ringed by mountains, so altitude, aspect (north-facing slopes) and proximity to lakes change the character of each site. Frost is a risk, which makes site selection important; around Wanaka, NZ Winegrowers says the lake reflects light and helps mitigate frost.
A little history is also a good conversation starter at the cellar door. According to Destination Queenstown, miner John Desire Feraud planted the region's first grapes in 1864. NZ Winegrowers notes that in 1895 government adviser Romeo Bragato called the area "pre-eminently suitable" for winemaking, while Destination Queenstown quotes Bragato as saying no country on earth produced better Burgundy grapes than Central Otago. Serious planting began in the early 1980s despite warnings that it was "too cold, too high and too far south," and, per Destination Queenstown, the first commercial Pinot Noir was released by Gibbston Valley in 1987.
Sub-regions at a glance

Central Otago is divided into several sub-regions, and many labels name them. Keep this table in mind when choosing a bottle.
| Sub-region | Character (per NZ Winegrowers) | Where it sits on your route |
|---|---|---|
| Gibbston | The highest sub-region; cooler, later ripening, lighter yet intense wines | The SH6 gorge between Queenstown and Cromwell |
| Bannockburn | One of the warmest, driest sites; harvest can be up to a month earlier | South of Cromwell |
| Cromwell, Lowburn, Pisa | West side of Lake Dunstan, mostly lower terraces and valley floor | Around Cromwell |
| Bendigo | Gentle north-facing slopes, stony soils | North-east of Cromwell |
| Alexandra | The most southerly; dry, with extremes in summer and winter | Further south-east of Cromwell |
| Wanaka | Cooler and slightly wetter; the lake mitigates frost | Lake Wanaka shore |
A simple way to taste the difference is to compare "lighter, finer Gibbston" with "riper Bannockburn." Asking for one of each side by side at a tasting works well.
Five cellar doors checked on official pages
The hours and fees below were checked on 30 September 2026 on each cellar door's official page (for Gibbston Valley, the NZ Winegrowers directory). Hours can change in winter and on public holidays, so please confirm on each official website before visiting. Each name links to the official page. Prices are per person in NZ dollars.
| Cellar door | Area | Hours (checked 30 Sep 2026) | Booking | Tasting fees and waivers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amisfield | Lake Hayes (near Queenstown) | Wed–Sun 11:30am–5pm | Groups of six or fewer can walk in; seven or more should email ahead ([email protected]). Curator must be booked | Explorer NZ$40 (about 30 min, waived with a NZ$70+ purchase), Connoisseur NZ$65 (waived with a NZ$100+ purchase), Curator NZ$125 |
| Chard Farm | Gibbston | Daily 11am–5pm; closed Christmas Day, Boxing Day and Good Friday; opens 1pm on Anzac Day | Bookings essential; groups of six or more email ahead | Tastings NZ$20 per person; no restaurant (stand-up tasting bar, seating not guaranteed) |
| Gibbston Valley | Gibbston | Daily 10am–5pm (NZ Winegrowers directory) | Check the official site before visiting | 45-minute vineyard, winery and wine cave tour NZ$35; large wine cave, cheesery and bike centre |

| Rippon | Wanaka | By appointment. The official page lists 11am–5pm (main text) but 12pm–5pm, Mondays 12pm–2pm (opening-hours table); check the time when booking | Tasting bookings required (a working farm and residence, not open for sightseeing); visitors are welcome without a booking to purchase wine only | Cellar door tasting free (up to six people, about 30 min); private tasting NZ$45 (about 1 hour, Mon–Fri 11am, 2–20 people); NZ$10 per person no-show fee |
A natural route runs east from Queenstown: Lake Hayes (Amisfield) → Gibbston (Chard Farm, Gibbston Valley) → Cromwell and Bannockburn (Mt Difficulty). Amisfield and Mt Difficulty are closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so early in the week plan around the places that open daily. If you are staying in Wanaka, add Rippon separately. Two or three unhurried stops a day are easier to manage than a packed schedule, especially when planning transport.
Getting around without driving
The first decision on any winery day is who drives. There are three main options.
- Take a wine tour: Tours or chauffeured vehicles from Queenstown let everyone taste. Compare operators and prices via Destination Queenstown and similar sites.
- Ride the Gibbston River Trail: According to Queenstown Trails, it runs 8.7 km one way from the AJ Hackett Kawarau Bridge Bungy Centre to Gibbston Back Road. It takes 1–2 hours by bike or 2–3 hours on foot, is Grade 2 (easy), and is gravel. Wineries near the trail include Gibbston Valley, Peregrine, Mount Edward, Mt Rosa and Kinross.
- Choose a designated driver: One person drives and does not taste. Plan the day so they can enjoy the views and a good meal.
The trail is easy, but the official Queenstown Trails page gives this advice:
- Highway crossing: The trail crosses the Gibbston Highway, a 100 km/h stretch. Stop and give way to traffic, and dismount and walk your bike across.
- Steep drops: Some sections have steep drops right beside the track. The first 5 km or so follows a terrace above the river, so watch children closely, and keep an eye on them where the trail runs alongside the highway.
- Weather: In winter it can be one of the coldest parts of the trail network, so carry warm and waterproof clothing. In summer, bring water, sunscreen, sunglasses and a sunhat.
- Trail conditions: When we checked on 30 September 2026, the official site showed a heavy-rain damage warning (mud, flooding, scour and washouts). Check the trail status before you set out.
Cycling after drinking is risky too — keep pours small or taste and use the spittoon.
Alcohol rules and drinking responsibly
- Purchase age: You must be 18 or over to buy alcohol in New Zealand. You may be asked for ID, so carry your passport.
- Drink-driving limits: According to NZTA and NZ Police, the breath alcohol limit for drivers aged 20 and over is 250 micrograms per litre of breath, and zero for drivers under 20. A few tastings can add up, so do not assume you are fine because you "only had a little."
- Drink responsibly: Tasting pours are small but add up across several stops. Drink water, eat with your wine, and the safest option is for the driver not to drink at all.
When to go

- Summer (December–February): Long days suit terraces and the bike trail. The Central Otago Pinot Noir Celebration is usually held around Queenstown in late January; check the official site for the next dates.
- Autumn (March–April): Usually harvest time, with warmer Bannockburn picking first. The vine leaves turn yellow.
- Winter: Easy to combine with a Queenstown or Wanaka ski trip, but cellar doors may open fewer days, so check ahead.

Pre-visit checklist
- Re-check opening days, hours and booking requirements on each cellar door's official site (especially on Mondays and Tuesdays)
- Decide transport first: designated driver, tour or bike
- If cycling, check the trail status and walk your bike across the highway
- Carry your passport (ID)
- Pack water, sunscreen and a jacket
- If you plan to bring wine home, check your home country's duty-free allowance and how to pack bottles
Central Otago is close to Queenstown and beautiful to visit, so you can enjoy a day there even without much wine knowledge. Remember one sub-region difference and settle your transport plan, and you are set.
