Waiheke Island Wineries Day Trip from Auckland: Ferry, Buses and Cellar Door Bookings

A ferry from downtown Auckland reaches Waiheke Island, home to a cluster of vineyards, in a little over 40 minutes. This guide covers four things you need for a day trip: how to use the Fullers360 ferry and check fares, how to get around the island by bus or tour, how to book cellar doors, and a sample schedule for the day. Fares and timetables were checked on the official websites on 30 September 2026. They change often, so please check the official sites again before you go.

What kind of wine region is Waiheke?

Waiheke is a subregion of the Auckland wine region as defined by NZ Winegrowers, alongside West Auckland and Matakana. According to the official description, the climate is warm, dry and maritime, with volcanic and clay soils. The island has long been known for Cabernet blends, and Syrah, Chardonnay, Montepulciano, Petit Verdot, Viognier and Pinot Gris are also drawing attention.

Waiheke's wine story began in 1978, when Kim and Jeanette Goldwater founded Goldie Estate. It is now home to the University of Auckland's wine science centre.

Vineyard area figures differ by source.

SourceScopeFigures
Waiheke Winegrowers' Association (WWA)Waiheke member growers30 growers, 216 ha planted, 20+ cellar doors
NZ Winegrowers 2026 vineyard reportWhole Auckland region252 ha forecast for 2026 (under 1% of the national total), 74 vineyards in 2025

The two figures cover different areas (WWA member growers on Waiheke versus the whole Auckland region) and are compiled differently, so they are hard to compare directly. Rather than stating "Waiheke alone is 216 ha", it is safer to read it as "about 216 ha by the association's count, 252 ha for all of Auckland in official statistics". Either way, it is a small region, but cellar doors are packed closely on a small island, which makes it easy to visit several in one day.

Step 1: Take the Fullers360 ferry

The standard way to reach Waiheke is the Fullers360 passenger ferry. It leaves from the downtown Auckland ferry terminal (Piers 11 and 12) and arrives at Matiatia Wharf on the west of the island.

Travel timeAbout 40-45 minutes; sailings via Devonport take about 10 minutes longer

Family (2 adults + 2 children aged 5-15) return (walk-up)NZ$132
Off-peak returnAdult NZ$46.50, child NZ$21, family NZ$99
Off-peak conditionsDepart downtown Auckland from 1pm and return from Waiheke from 7pm (both conditions apply)
Under 5Free with a parent or guardian
  • Fares and timetables change often. Treat the table as a guide and check the Fullers360 Waiheke page before booking.
  • Off-peak fares require both conditions: leaving Auckland from 1pm and returning from Waiheke from 7pm. Leaving after 1pm but returning before 7pm does not count. A day trip that goes over in the morning and comes back before evening pays the standard fare (NZ$62 per adult).
  • The family off-peak fare does not cover return sailings between Devonport and Waiheke. Double-check the conditions on the booking screen.
  • Check the last ferry back first. It is easy to lose track of time after a few tastings.

Step 2: Getting around the island

From Matiatia Wharf you have four main options.

  1. Walking: Around Oneroa, near the wharf, you will find nearby cellar doors such as Mudbrick and Cable Bay. The roads are hilly, so wear comfortable shoes.
  2. Public buses: Stonyridge's official visitor page points to the 50A and 50B buses. Check routes and times with the Auckland Transport journey planner.
  3. Hop-on Hop-off bus: Fullers360's Western Explorer bus runs from Matiatia to 15 stops, including vineyards, beaches and restaurants. On the check date it was listed from NZ$99 per adult including the ferry, but service and prices can vary by season, so check the official site.
  4. Wine tours and taxis: Tour packages combine several vineyards, which is convenient if you would rather not plan the route yourself.

Skip the rental car or scooter if you plan to taste. New Zealand's drink-driving limit for drivers aged 20 and over is 250 micrograms per litre of breath (50 mg per 100 mL of blood); for drivers under 20 it is zero (NZTA). Under-20s cannot drive after even one drink.

Step 3: Choosing and booking cellar doors

The details below were checked on each winery's official website on the check date. Opening hours and tasting fees change with the season and events, so check the official site before you visit.

Booking tips

  • Restaurant tables fill quickly in summer and at weekends. If you want lunch, book the restaurant first and plan the rest of the day around it.
  • Small groups can walk in for a tasting at some places, such as Mudbrick. Larger groups should contact the winery in advance.
  • Man O' War is far from the wharf, so sort out transport first. According to the official site, there is a direct ferry from the Viaduct (about 90 minutes), or you can take the Eastern Explorer bus from Matiatia.
  • Opening days change with the season at some cellar doors. For example, according to its official site Man O' War switches to winter hours (Wed-Sun 11:00-17:00, closed Monday and Tuesday) from 20 April and back to summer hours (daily) from 3 November. If you visit in October, the winter schedule applies.

Step 4: A sample day-trip schedule

This is an editorial example based on official opening hours. Adjust it to actual ferry and bus times.

TimePlan
Around 09:00Depart the downtown ferry terminal (about 40-45 minutes)
Around 10:00Arrive at Matiatia, then walk or take the bus to Oneroa
10:30-12:00One cellar door near Oneroa (e.g. Mudbrick, which opens in the morning)
12:00-14:00Lunch at a booked winery restaurant (e.g. Cable Bay)
14:00-15:30Bus to the Onetangi side, visit Stonyridge or similar
After 16:00Walk Onetangi Beach, return to Matiatia and catch the ferry
  • Two or three wineries are plenty for one day. More stops mean more travel time and more wine.
  • Stonyridge closes at 16:00 on weekdays and Sundays, so do not leave it too late.
  • Aim for a return ferry one or two sailings earlier than the last one.

Useful English phrases

SituationPhrase
Buying a ferry ticketA return ticket to Waiheke, please.
Asking about the busWhich bus stops near Stonyridge?
Tasting without a bookingCan we walk in for a tasting?
Checking the last ferryWhat time is the last ferry back?
Keeping tastings lightCould I just have a small pour, please?

Alcohol rules to know

  • You must be 18 or older to buy alcohol in New Zealand and may be asked for ID (NZ Police). Bring photo ID such as your passport.
  • Drink-driving limits are as described above; the limit for under-20s is zero (NZTA).
  • Tasting pours are small, but they add up over several wineries. Drink water often, eat with your wine, and feel free to leave a glass unfinished. The surest option is for whoever is driving not to drink at all.

Pre-departure checklist

  • Check fares, timetables and the last ferry back on the Fullers360 website
  • Book lunch and any guided tastings
  • Check seasonal opening days for the cellar doors you plan to visit
  • Decide how you will get around (bus, Hop-on Hop-off, or tour)
  • Bring photo ID, comfortable shoes and a windproof jacket
