공식 사이트는 "꼴찌가 없다(no one finishes last)"고 소개합니다

(No barcode, no time, no exception)"입니다.

parkrun in New Zealand: a free 5 km run every Saturday morning
At 8 o'clock on a Saturday morning, in parks and along lakefronts across New Zealand, families pushing buggies, people trying their first 5 km and runners chasing a time all line up at the same start. This is parkrun. It costs nothing, you register once for life, and walking the whole way is fine. This guide explains what parkrun in New Zealand is, how travellers can register before leaving home, how to handle your barcode, and which events you can join in Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Queenstown, Rotorua and Taupō, based on parkrun's official sites. If your itinerary includes even one Saturday, this is an easy way to spend the first hour of it.
At a glance
- Distance: 5 km
- When: every Saturday morning, mostly starting at 8am (Queenstown is 8am or 9am depending on the season)
- Time limit: none — walkers are part of the event to the end. Keep your Saturday morning free for the first-timers' briefing and the coffee afterwards, and planning gets easier
- Difficulty: anyone can take part; the official site says "no one finishes last"
- Cost: free
- Booking: none, but you need a one-off online registration and a barcode to get a result
- Number of events: 75 nationwide, according to the parkrun New Zealand homepage (checked 30 September 2026)
- Checked: 30 September 2026. Check each event page for cancellations or time changes
What is parkrun?

The parkrun New Zealand website describes parkrun as a free community event where you can walk, jog, run, volunteer or spectate. It is a 5 km course held every Saturday morning, and every event is run by volunteers.
According to parkrun's global About page, it began in 2004 with 13 runners and five volunteers in Bushy Park, UK, and now has more than twelve million registered parkrunners. Events run the same way everywhere, so the account you use in New Zealand works at parkruns in other countries too.
For travellers, there are three big pluses.
- It's free: no entry fee and nothing you have to buy
- No route-finding: volunteers check the course, and marshals or signs mark key points
- You meet locals naturally: each event page names the cafe where people gather for coffee afterwards
Registration and barcodes: sort them out before you fly
According to parkrun Support's registration guide, anyone aged four or over can register, and it only takes a few minutes.
- Choose your country on the parkrun site and click Register at the top right
- Fill in the form; a confirmation email arrives with your personal barcode
- Print it or download it to your phone
- Registration lasts for life, and you never need to register again for any parkrun in the world
- Don't register twice — results are not merged between profiles
The confirmation email can take a while, so register a few days before your trip rather than the night before. If it doesn't arrive, check your spam folder first.
Bring your barcode. parkrun's rule, set out in its barcode guide, is "No barcode, no time, no exception." After you cross the line you receive a finish token, and a volunteer scans it together with your barcode.
- You can still take part without a barcode, but your name will not appear in the results. Take a finish token anyway and hand it back before you leave
- The free parkrun app can show your barcode as a QR code
- parkrun still recommends carrying a wristband, tag or printed barcode, which includes your In Case of Emergency (ICE) details. Phones run flat on the road, so a paper copy in your wallet is a good backup

These are events in cities where many travellers stay. Times and locations come from each event's official page.

- Course: entirely on permanent paths, which suits beginners
Christchurch: Hagley parkrun

Taupō: Taupō parkrun

For other places, use the map on the New Zealand events list. The official list also includes travel spots such as Nelson, Dunedin, Wānaka, Hamilton and Tauranga.
On the day: what to do the first time
- The night before: check the event page and the cancellations list. parkrun Support says events can be cancelled because of weather, lightning or other events in the park
- Arrive 20–30 minutes early: course pages warn that parking may be limited, and ask people to walk, cycle or use public transport where possible
- First timers' briefing: many events explain the course to newcomers before the start. If English is a hurdle, translate the course map beforehand
- Where to stand: faster runners at the front, walkers and buggies towards the back
- After the finish: collect your finish token and have it scanned with your barcode
- Results: a results email follows, and results can take a few hours to reach the app. If they still aren't there by the end of the day, check that you are listed on the parkrun website
Bringing family or a dog
- Children: according to the children's guide, children can register from age four, and at 5 km events under-11s must stay within arm's reach of an adult at all times
- Buggies: pushchairs and running buggies are welcome, but buggy boards for an extra child and trailer-style buggies are not
- Wheels: under the wheels policy, bikes, scooters, skateboards and similar are not allowed for safety reasons. Wheelchair users are welcome
- Dogs: the dog policy says to check the event page first, as rules differ by event. Where dogs are allowed, it's one dog per person on a short, handheld, non-extendable lead — no waist harnesses — and you can't bring a dog and a buggy at the same time
Fitting parkrun into your trip

- A night in a city: if you arrive on Friday evening, try parkrun on Saturday morning, breakfast at the cafe where the event team gathers, then sightseeing in the afternoon
- Road trips: keep Saturday morning free for the parkrun wherever you are and drive in the afternoon. Rotorua or Taupō fit easily into a North Island route, and Christchurch or Queenstown into a South Island one
- Holiday season: parkrun New Zealand's special events page shows which events will hold extra runs on Christmas Day 2026 and New Year's Day 2027. Only one result can be recorded on each extra day
Safety and etiquette
- Weather: course pages warn that some sections can be muddy, leafy or puddled after rain. South Island winter mornings are cold, so bring a layer. Check the forecast on MetService
- Sun: UV can be strong even on summer mornings. Follow SunSmart advice and bring a hat and sunscreen
- Your health: course pages ask you to make sure you are fit enough to walk, jog or run 5 km, and to stop and get help if you see someone in serious trouble. The emergency number is 111
- Share the path: parkrun uses shared park paths, and every event asks participants to give way to other park users
- Volunteers: parkrun only happens because of volunteers. As a visitor, respect the event team's decisions, as the official guidance asks
